7 Day Japan Itinerary: Tokyo & Kyoto for First-Timers

Updated September 7, 2026 · 5 min read · By Japan Travel Planner

One week in Japan is enough — if you refuse to overstuff it. This itinerary makes the one decision that saves 7-day trips: two bases only (Tokyo and Kyoto), one shinkansen ride between them, and an exit through Osaka. No daily hotel changes, no six-sights-a-day marches, and margin for the wandering that makes Japan Japan.

Day by day

Day 1 — Land softly

Whatever time you land, plan nothing. Get from the airport with the option you chose in advance (Narita/Haneda transfer guide), tap in with Suica, eat within two blocks of your hotel, sleep. Jet lag will wake you at 5 a.m. — that's tomorrow's superpower.

Day 2 — West Tokyo

Meiji Shrine when it opens (jet lag makes this easy), walk Harajuku's backstreets and Omotesando, lunch nearby, then Shibuya: the crossing, a rooftop view, dinner in an izakaya alley. One district cluster per day is the pace that works.

Day 3 — Old Tokyo

Senso-ji in Asakusa before 8 a.m., Ueno Park and one museum, then Akihabara (electronics/anime) or Ginza (polish and depachika food halls). Evening: Shinjuku's neon or an early night — tomorrow is a travel day.

Day 4 — The bullet train day

Check out, shinkansen to Kyoto (~2h15m; reserve the oversized-luggage seat if your case is big, or forward it with takkyubin and carry a day bag). Afternoon: Nishiki Market grazing, then Gion and the Shirakawa canal at dusk — your first golden-hour in the old capital.

Day 5 — Kyoto east

The day that earns the 6 a.m. alarm: Kiyomizu-dera at opening, down through Sannenzaka's empty lanes, Kodai-ji, Maruyama Park. Afternoon on the Philosopher's Path and one big temple (Nanzen-ji or Ginkaku-ji). After dinner, Fushimi Inari — the torii tunnels are open all night and nearly empty after 7 p.m. Full details in the Kyoto 2-day guide.

Day 6 — Kyoto west

Arashiyama's bamboo grove by 8 a.m., Tenryu-ji garden, river walk; cross town to Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) after lunch; finish downtown — Pontocho alley for dinner, Kamo river banks for the evening.

Day 7 — Exit through Osaka

KIX flyers: morning train to Osaka (30 min), stash bags in a locker, Dotonbori and Kuromon Market for a last food blitz, airport express to KIX (~45 min). Flying from Tokyo instead? Take the evening shinkansen back on Day 6 and sleep near your airport — never race Osaka-to-Narita on departure day.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for Japan?

Yes, for a focused first taste: Tokyo + Kyoto done properly, with an Osaka exit. The mistake isn't the length — it's adding more cities to it.

Do I need a JR Pass?

No. The only long train is Tokyo→Kyoto (~¥14,000); the 7-day pass costs ¥50,000. Point-to-point tickets plus an IC card win by ~¥30,000.

Tokyo or Osaka for the flight home?

Open-jaw (into Tokyo, out of KIX) if you can — it usually costs little more and saves a 2.5-hour backtrack.

Which city gets more time?

Even split. Tokyo could take ten days, but Kyoto's crowd-free early mornings are the memory you'll keep.
