Pink cherry blossoms against a blue spring sky

Japan in March: Weather, Cherry Blossoms & Crowds

Updated September 7, 2026 · 4 min read · By Japan Travel Planner

March is really two different months in Japan. Early March is winter's quiet tail: crisp days, plum blossoms, low prices, empty temples. Late March is the opening act of cherry blossom season — the most in-demand travel window of the Japanese year. Same country, wildly different trip. Here's how to choose your half and pack for it.

Weather: what it actually feels like

Tokyo and Kyoto: highs around 13–14°C (55–57°F), mornings near 4–5°C, warming noticeably week by week. Rain is occasional rather than persistent, and the light is beautifully clear. Osaka runs similar; Sapporo is still snowy (late-season skiing is excellent); Okinawa is already at 20°C+ beach-walk weather. Pack layers, a real jacket for evenings, and see the packing checklist spring notes.

Crowds and prices: the March curve

Graduation trips (Japanese school year ends in March) add some domestic travel all month, but the real inflection is blossom timing: hotel rates step up around March 20 and peak into early April. If you want spring smells at winter prices, aim March 5–18. If blossoms are the mission, treat it as blossom-season planning — book Kyoto 4–6 months out or base in Osaka. Full seasonal context in the best-time guide.

Verdict

Early March: one of Japan's most underrated windows — the classic route at low-season prices with plum blossoms and Omizutori as bonuses. Late March: extraordinary if you've planned it like an operation; frustrating and expensive if you haven't. Either way it beats midsummer — just know which trip you're booking.
