Japan in April: Blossoms, Perfect Weather & the Golden Week Trap
April is three different trips wearing one name: the blossom finale (week one), the perfect quiet middle (the month's best-kept secret), and the Golden Week stampede (from April 29). Pick your third deliberately and April may be Japan's finest month; drift into the wrong one and you'll pay double to queue.

Week one: the blossom finale
If your dates land here, run the cherry blossom playbook: booked-months-ago hotels, dawn visits, and an embrace of hanafubuki — the petal blizzards after peak that many travelers love more than full bloom. Boat rentals under the petals (Chidorigafuchi in Tokyo, this page's photo) are the signature move. Missed the peak? Head north: Tohoku's famous trees (Hirosaki Castle's moats, Kakunodate's samurai street) peak mid-to-late April, and the Fuji Five Lakes area runs later too.
The secret middle (Apr 15–28)
Blossom tourists leave, Golden Week hasn't started, and Japan turns luminous green under 20°C skies. This is arguably the year's best all-around window that nobody talks about: the 14-day route at shoulder prices, comfortable city walking, azaleas and wisteria taking the blossom baton (Ashikaga Flower Park's wisteria tunnels from late April are jaw-dropping). Book normally, travel freely.

The Golden Week trap (Apr 29 – ~May 6)
Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, Children's Day (koinobori carp streamers everywhere) — stacked holidays that put the whole country on the move. For visitors this means sold-out shinkansen reservations, hotel prices at 2–3×, and famous sights at maximum density. The plays: finish your trip before the 29th, settle in one city and explore locally while everyone else travels, or lean into festival atmosphere at neighborhood level. Do not plan your Tokyo→Kyoto move for April 29–May 3.
