Day trip or overnight
Ninety minutes each way makes Hiroshima a feasible day trip from Osaka or Kyoto, and plenty of people do it. But the day contains two things that each deserve half a day — the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and the island of Miyajima with its floating torii — so a day trip means rushing one or dropping it.
One night is the better call if your trip has the room. It also puts you at Miyajima early or late, when the day-trippers from Osaka have not yet arrived or have already gone.
Getting to Miyajima
From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo line to Miyajimaguchi and the ferry across — about ¥700 in total, and around 40 minutes. There is a separate municipal visitor levy for the island, payable on arrival. The JR ferry is covered by a JR Pass; the competing Matsudai ferry is not.
Which train, if you have a pass
This is the one route where the pass-holder gets the better train rather than the slower one. Sakura services on the Sanyo shinkansen use 2+2 seating in ordinary cars, noticeably wider than the Nozomi's 3+2, and they are included in the nationwide pass outright, while riding the Nozomi costs pass holders a supplementary ticket on top. The time cost is ten to twenty minutes. Take the Sakura — here the free train is also the better one.
Where this leg sits in a rail pass calculation
Osaka–Hiroshima return is about ¥21,000, which is a large share of a 7-day nationwide pass on its own. If your itinerary includes it alongside a Tokyo–Kansai leg, the pass arithmetic tips much closer. Run the actual legs through the JR Pass calculator before buying either.
