How to read the result
- Tickets win for most first trips on the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka route (~¥27,000 in fares vs ¥50,000 pass).
- The pass wins on long multi-region loops — e.g. Tokyo → Hiroshima → Kyoto → Tokyo inside 7 days.
- Check regional passes before the nationwide pass: the JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (~¥12,000 / 5 days) and friends are often the real bargains.
- The nationwide pass includes Hikari and Kodama, not the fastest Nozomi/Mizuho. Since October 2023 you can ride those on a supplementary ticket — ¥4,960 Tokyo–Kyoto or Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 Tokyo–Hiroshima, per journey. Budget for it, or accept 30–45 minutes more.
