¥840 · about 50 minutes
JR Yamatoji rapid from Osaka Station, covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Take JR if you hold a rail pass or you are starting from Osaka Station. Take Kintetsu from Namba — not because it is faster, but because Kintetsu-Nara Station is a short walk from the deer and JR Nara is not.

The arrival station decides this, not the fare

Nara's two stations are not interchangeable. Kintetsu-Nara sits about five minutes' walk from Nara Park, the deer and the approach to Todai-ji. JR Nara is roughly fifteen minutes further out, or a short bus ride.

On a day trip that gap is half an hour of walking there and back, which outweighs the fare difference. The rule of thumb: from Osaka Station take JR; from Namba take Kintetsu — and if you hold a JR Pass, take JR from anywhere and accept the walk, because JR is then free.

Nara from Osaka or from Kyoto

Nara sits between the two, so it works from either. It is about 50 minutes from Osaka and 45 minutes from Kyoto — close enough that the real question is which city you are sleeping in, not which is nearer.

If your trip includes both, the efficient move is to visit Nara on the day you move between them, leaving your luggage in a station coin locker. That saves an entire return journey. The itinerary builder does exactly this when the trip has the nights for it.

How long the day actually needs

Five or six unhurried hours covers the core: Todai-ji's Great Buddha, the deer park, and Kasuga Taisha's stone lanterns, all within walking distance of each other. Add an hour if you want Kofuku-ji or the Nara National Museum.

Go early. The deer are calmest in the morning, Todai-ji is quiet before the coaches arrive, and you will be back in Osaka in time for dinner in Dotonbori — which is the right way round, because Nara has nothing like Osaka's evening.

Putting the legs together

Individual legs are easy. The hard part is a route that does not double back and leaves enough time in each city. The printable Japan Travel Planner has the route builders and the booking timeline that turn a list of trains into a trip.
