Every other route on this site ends with ‘take the train’. This one does not, quite. Four hours is long enough that a discounted flight is a real choice — though once you add the airport transfer at both ends, the train still usually wins on total time and always on hassle.

The rail pass rule changed, and this is where it bites

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass historically excluded the Nozomi outright. It now admits pass holders onto Nozomi and Mizuho services on payment of a supplement — and for Tokyo to Hiroshima that supplement is about ¥6,500, which is a third of the ticket price again.

So a pass holder has a real decision on this route, not a formality:

• Pay the supplement and ride the Nozomi direct in about four hours.
• Pay nothing, take a Hikari to Shin-Osaka and change to a Sakura, and arrive in about five.

An hour of your day against ¥6,500. On a long trip with plenty of days, take the free option and read a book — and the Sakura's 2+2 seating west of Osaka is more comfortable than the Nozomi's 3+2 anyway. When the flight actually makes sense

Hiroshima has an airport, and unlike Kyoto or Osaka the train journey is long enough for that to matter. The honest arithmetic: 90 minutes in the air, plus about 50 minutes and ¥1,500 from Hiroshima Airport into the city, plus getting to Haneda, plus the usual airport waiting. Call it four hours door to door on a good day — the same as the train, for a discounted fare that can undercut it.

Take the flight if you find a cheap fare, you are already near Haneda, and you are travelling light. Take the train if you value not thinking about it: no check-in, no baggage limit, city centre to city centre, and a seat you can work in the whole way.

Consider not doing it in one go

Four hours is a lot of a holiday to spend sitting down, and Tokyo to Hiroshima runs straight through Kyoto and Osaka. Most itineraries are better off stopping in Kyoto for a few nights and continuing from Osaka to Hiroshima later — that leg is only about 90 minutes.

Going straight through makes sense mainly if Hiroshima is the point of the trip, or if you are doubling back to Tokyo to fly home. The itinerary builder only puts Hiroshima in the route when the trip has enough nights to reach it without wrecking everything else.

How long to stay once you arrive

Hiroshima is not a stopover. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum deserve an unhurried half day and are emotionally heavy; Miyajima and its floating torii deserve the other half, and the ferry from Miyajimaguchi adds about 40 minutes each way.

Doing both in a single day after a four-hour morning train is a bad plan. One night is the minimum that respects the place, and it also puts you on Miyajima early or late, when the day-trippers are not there.
