How the numbers are built
- Flights — typical round-trip economy from your region, per person.
- Accommodation — per night, per room (2 travellers share a room; odd numbers round up), adjusted by season. Ryokan nights are priced separately at ¥25,000–45,000 per person.
- Food — per person per day at your style's typical spend: ¥2,500 budget, ¥6,500 mid-range, ¥12,000 comfort.
- Local transport — ¥1,000 per person per day on an IC card, plus airport transfers.
- Long-distance trains — the classic route's point-to-point fares. Check whether a pass beats them with the JR Pass calculator (usually it doesn't).
- Sights & extras — temple entries, museums, one or two paid attractions, an eSIM, and a small buffer.
Yen figures are converted at roughly ¥150 to the dollar. Rates move — check today's before you commit to a budget.
Turn the estimate into a real budget
The printable Japan Travel Planner has the budget worksheet this calculator is based on — estimate, booked and paid columns per category, so the number stays honest as you book.
What the result means
Treat the total as a planning midpoint, not a promise. Flights swing hardest (book 2–5 months out), accommodation swings second (season and city), and food is the line you control day to day. If the number is higher than you hoped, the budget guide shows exactly where to cut without ruining the trip — and where not to.
